What is Chiropractic?

Contrary to popular belief, chiropractic is not just about neck and back pain. While chiropractic is great for pain relief, that is not the primary objective. Chiropractic focuses on balancing the structure so that the nerve system can function optimally. In other words, when our spine is out of balance, or misaligned, it impacts the flow of information from our brain to our body, and body back to the brain. Chiropractic is functional neurology. By improving the function [and mobility] of joints in the spine, the nerves are able to work more efficiently. The nerve system is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and a vast network of nerves that run throughout the entire body. Our skull and the bones of our spine protect this system, which is why it is important to keep the bones of the spine healthy. This system is in charge everything we do; our nerves are the Control Center for our health and vitality.

Is chiropractic safe for kids?

Yes! Chiropractic is safe for people of any age, even new born babies. Infants and children do not recieve the same kind of adjustments as adults because their bodies and tissues have not fully developed yet. Pediatric adjustments are much lower force than adults, but just as effective! Chiropractic care for infants helps with things like cholic, interrupted sleep patterns, constipation, and the list goes on. Why does it help with these things? Because if the structure is out of balance, it has a significant impact on the physiological and neurolgical function of the body. By restoring balance to the structure, we restore balance to the nerve system, and the result is that the body resumes working the way it is designed to. Why do I need to see a chiropractor?

I heard that once you start you can never stop, is this true?

This is a very common question. Chiropractic is an important part of keeping the spine and nerve system healthy. For the best results, chiropractic should be used to maintain health, and prevent more serious issues from occuring. Most people seek out chiropractic for the first time after having had issues for years, often decades. If the first time you recieve a chiropractic adjustment is in your third, fourth, or fifth decade, it is going to take a lot more work to get everything stabilized than if you had been going to a chiropractor since childhood. This is precisely why Dr. Sweeney is passionate about working with kids. If your first visit to the chiropractor is to deal with chronic pain that you have had for years, in most cases it is going to take three to six months of more frequent adjustments to get your spine back to a healthy state. Once your spine is stable, frequency reduces, and it is just a matter of maintaining it. In the same way that it is important to see a dentist to keep our teeth healthy, it is important to see a chiropractor to keep our spines healthy so that our bodies can continue to work optimally.
